7 Reasons to Choose CBD

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is an extremely popular compound found in the cannabis plant. Alongside THC, CBD is one of the more popular cannabinoids and can produce a variety of benefits for users. One of the most favored, perhaps, is that it does not act as a psychoactive agent as with THC. Therefore, when you consume CBD you do not get “stoned”, but rather reap its benefits in more subtle ways.

Much like its psychoactive cousin, CBD communicates with the endocannabinoid system. More specifically, the CB1 and CB2 receptors found throughout the brain and throughout the Central Nervous System and the CB2 receptors are found in large concentrations in the immune system

CBD is available in a number of forms including isolates, oils (tinctures, vape pens, distillates), edibles and, of course, in pre-rolls or as regular flower. Each form of cannabidiol has its own benefits, but overall there are 7 reasons to choose CBD as part of a healthy lifestyle.

CBD Can Relieve Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the major uses for CBD, especially among female users who often suffer a greater amount of anxiety than their male counterparts. So, why does CBD work so well?

When you introduce CBD to the endocannabinoid system, it increases the amounts of cannabinoids available in your body by altering enzymes to stop the removal of excess anandamide (the bodies natural endocannabinoid) to allow for more of the “bliss” molecule throughout the body to improve mood. CBD also reduces blood flow to certain areas of the brain, such as the hypothalamus which is specifically linked with anxiety. The lessened activity in this part of the brain can help to quiet symptoms of anxiety.

Due to the popularity of CBD as a self-treatment for anxiety, several studies have been conducted to determine its efficacy. A 2015 study done by the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that CBD can reduce general anxiety and social anxiety levels. Another 2015 study backed this up noting that CBD is effective in reducing anxiety associated with general anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, PTSD and panic disorder.

A more recent 2017 research review looked at the effects of CBD specifically on panic disorders and found that it exhibits anti-panic properties. In addition the study concluded that CBD is not only non-psychoactive, but is safe and well-tolerated orally as well as not inducing dependance.

CBD Helps With Pain & Inflammation

Another extremely popular use for CBD is for chronic pain and inflammation, as with conditions such as fibromyalgia and arthritis. CBD is especially growing in popularity among seniors who value its pain relieving properties. In fact, in states where marijuana is legalized for recreational use, individuals aged 50 and above now make up 36% of registered patients.

There have been a number of studies and anecdotal evidence to corroborate the benefits of CBD for pain relief. In fact, it goes as far back as the 1800s when the first cannabis pain studies were conducted! One way in which CBD is able to manage pain and inflammation is by acting on the CB2 receptor, which is found in immune cells. CBD is able to act on these receptors in order to block or reduce pain signals and lessen inflammation in the cells. The anti-inflammatory properties are also partly due to CBD’s inhibition of adenosine reuptake. Adenosine is a neurotransmitter that plays a significant role in cardiovascular function, blood flow and myocardial oxygen consumption. By delaying the reuptake of this neurotransmitter, CBD boosts the levels of adenosine within the brain which results in a broad anti-inflammatory effect throughout the body.

CBD Reduces Cancer

The relationship between cannabis and cancer has been a long debate as to whether cannabis merely helps manage cancer symptoms or can actually reduce cancer cells. While there is still copious amounts of research to be done, the available studies and research do show positive correlations between cannabis use and reducing cancer, as well as managing symptoms.

Given the number of different types of cancer, it is not a one-size-fits-all treatment, but there has been some promising studies:

  • A 2005 study focusing on glioma cells demonstrated CBD’s ability to limit tumor invasion
  • A 2006 in vitro study reviewed the effects of CBD finding it able to induce apoptosis in breast cancer cells, which was followed up by a 2011 study of similar findings
  • A 2007 study followed showing that CBD can reduce aggressive breast cancer cells
  • A 2010 study concentrated on bladder cancer cells, finding that the abundance of these cells progressively decreased with increasing concentrations of CBD
  • A 2011 study looked at CBD and prostate cancer cells finding that CBD can inhibit cell growth

Several other studies found similar results of CBD being able to inhibit the growth of cancer cells or induce apoptosis for leukemia, lung cancer as well as dozens of anecdotal accounts and supporting evidence.

Reasons to Choose CBD

CBD Manages Depression

According to the World Health Organization, depression is the most common disability worldwide. While the benefits of CBD and depression are still being explored, it has shown effective antidepressant qualities in several animal studies.

The research done so far shows that CBD influences the 5-HT1A receptor, which is responsible for releasing serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that contributes to individuals feelings of happiness and well-being. A decreased amount of this neurotransmitter is often linked to depression and anxiety disorders. CBD is an effective treatment as the influence of this cannabinoid causes this receptor to fire more effectively, thereby increasing serotonin production and stabilizing its presence throughout the body.

CBD Manages Seizure Disorders

CBD has been very well tested for epilepsy relief going back to the 1970s. In fact, the clinical use of CBD has advanced the most when it comes to seizure disorders.

More recently, a 2016 study gave patients 0.9-2.3 grams of CBD oil per pound of body weight with astounding results that caused a median reduction in seizures of 36.5%. Another study in 2017 furthered this research when looking at CBD and Dravet Syndrome. The study revealed a median decrease in seizures per month from 12.4 to 5.9 with the use of CBD.

In fact, Charlotte’s Web a CBD strain, was so named after a girl named “Charlotte” whose seizures were almost entirely reduced thanks to the powerful anti-seizure properties.

CBD Improves Cardiovascular Health

An all-around beneficial compound, CBD does not stop at pain and mental disorders. In fact, CBD is proven to have a positive effect on cardiovascular health as well as mental health.

High blood pressure is linked to a number of conditions and health risks including stroke, heart attack and metabolic syndromes. CBD has been found to actually lower blood pressure, while also reducing the bodies response to tests designed to spike blood sugar levels.

CBD also contains powerful antioxidant and anti-anxiety properties, further reducing risk factors linked to heart disease by reducing harmful oxidative stress.

CBD Has Neuroprotective Properties

One of the more incredible aspects of CBD are the neuroprotective properties it displays in reference to many debilitating conditions such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia.

Recent research has associated Alzheimer’s and dementia to an increase in amyloid proteins, causing these proteins to lump together and form plaques that disrupt cell function in the brain. This is believed to be the number one underlying cause for Alzheimer’s, but it is unclear whether it is a genetic factor or environmental or a combination of both. CBD is not only able to help reduce the build-up of these amyloid proteins, but it can also reduce inflammation in the brain that can result in cognitive difficulties.

A 2004 study found that when cells were exposed to these amyloids, the cell survival rate decreased significantly. However, when the cells were then treated with CBD, the cell survival increased significantly, providing a positive correlation between CBD and neurological health.

4 Reasons to Keep Smoking Jays

According to a 2017 survey, 52% of of US respondents prefer smoking cannabis in a blunt or joint. In Canada, the number is even higher with 68% of respondents preferring cannabis joints to other consumption methods.

There are a lot of reasons to keep smoking jays, but here are four of our favourites:

Semi-Discrete and Ultra Portable

Unlike other methods of smoking, such as a bong or pipe, joints are portable and considered to be more discreet than other methods. While joints do still have that distinct marijuana smell (unlike vape pens), they are much easier to carry around and light up than other methods. Plus, joints work instantly where edibles are extremely discreet but often take 60 to 90 minutes to take affect and are harder to control. Another benefit of joints is that you can purchase pre-rolled joints or prep a few at home so you’re always ready for your next adventure!

Artistic and Creative Freedom

One of the more fun aspects of smoking cannabis through joints is that they offer users a creative outlet. Considered to be mini works of art, joints are an expressive way to enjoy medical marijuana. Most individuals who can roll a basic joint will be able to nail these fun designs on their first try by following a step-by-step guide or video! As you get better, you can go on to produce more intricate designs and impress your friends!

Reasons to Keep Smoking Jays

Experience the Full Flavour of Cannabis

Another key aspect of smoking cannabis in joints as opposed to bongs, vape pens or edibles is that you are more likely to experience the unique flavors of each strain. Especially if you roll with all-natural rolling papers, which better preserve the qualities of the flower within. While some users enjoy flavored rollies or cigar wraps, most individuals prefer to enjoy their cannabis as naturally as possible.

Smoking blunts are not ideal, given the tobacco content, but joints are considered to be very safe. In fact, according to a 2015 study, cannabis users maintained the same lung function as non-users – if not better. This is slightly different from the blunt users as tobacco is well known to reduce lung function.

The Social Aspect

Reasons to Keep Smoking Jays

Another great aspect of smoking joints is that they are a very sociable way to consume weed! Almost everyone has encountered someone at a party who pulls out a joint and lights it up, only to have a gathering of individuals come over for a puff, puff, pass session! Cannabis also helps reduce social anxiety, making users who would otherwise avoid social contact feel more comfortable in social situations and more open to new experiences and meeting new people.

How to Stretch Your Cannabis Dollar

Whether you use cannabis for medical reasons or recreation, there is no getting around the fact that it can add up – and fast! If you’re a regular user looking to stretch your cannabis dollar, here are a few tips to help you save on your wallet.

Consider Your Strain

Stretch Your Cannabis Dollar

One of the first things you can do when it comes to stretching your cannabis dollar is to consider the strain. With hundreds of different strains, there are so many options for potency as well as effects. If you are someone that is looking for potent effects, or is using for medical treatment, you are better off with the top-shelf strains, such as platinum pre-rolls. These strains are more potent, so they can be more expensive, but also pack a greater punch and can be used more sparingly. Individuals who enjoy the act of smoking and are less concerned with potency, may find shake or lower cost options to fit within their budget without limiting their use.

Smoke Efficiently

Stretch Your Cannabis DollarOnce you have chosen a strain best suited to your preferences, the next tip is to use this bud efficiently! One particularly good suggestion for smoking efficiently and making your cannabis last longer, is to wait a while before you smoke more. If you have had a couple tokes and are already feeling a nice buzz coming on, it may be a good idea to snuff out your joint or resist immediately packing another bowl. Instead, try to enjoy your buzz for the next half hour and then decide whether you’re high enough, or have achieved pain relief, before using the rest. It is easy to mindlessly toke on a pre-roll, but pausing now and again can really help make it last.

Use Leftovers for Edibles

Stretch Your Cannabis Dollar

Leftover kief, trim or even roaches can be great for making edibles – and helpful when it comes to stretching your cannabis dollar! One of the easiest ways to do this is to simply decarb the leftover plant material in the oven and then making cannabutter, which can be used to bake edibles such as cookies, brownies or even put on toast!

Store Your Buds Properly

Stretch Your Cannabis Dollar

Surprisingly a lot of stoners and regular medical users fail to store their marijuana properly. While it may be convenient, the paper or plastic bag from the dispensary is not the most ideal storage container. In fact, clear plastic baggies actually expose the buds to light, which degrades the potency and flavor. In addition, it can rub against the bud and remove precious (and potent) trichomes. By transferring flower or joints to blacked out mason jars, it can help the marijuana to last for several months without loss of quality.

Budget Your Cannabis

Stretch Your Cannabis Dollar

While no one wants to hear the word “budget”, it can come in very handy for consistent medical and recreational users. Of course, there are two ways to look at budgeting cannabis. Not surprisingly, the first is to actual budget out your cannabis spending to ensure you have enough funds for your medication, as well as other bills. This can help with overspending and end of the month “uh oh’s”. The other form of budgeting cannabis refers to actually dividing out your cannabis for later use. For instance, you may want to purchase one month’s worth of cannabis all at once. In this case, setting aside an amount for that day or week can be helpful to ensure you are not over medicating.

Take a Hiatus

Stretch Your Cannabis Dollar

Another tip for stretching your cannabis dollar that not everyone wants to hear is to take a hiatus. If you’re finding that it is taking more and more flower to achieve the desired effects, this can be a good indicator that it is time for a “T-Break”. A T-Break, or THC break, refers to pausing your cannabis consumption in order to decrease your tolerance. It is suggested that individuals stop consuming cannabis for 1-2 weeks once or twice per year to keep their tolerance levels lower (and more affordable). This is not always possible for medical patients who require regular doses of medication, however, by swapping to edibles for 1-2 weeks instead, you can still help decrease your tolerance from cannabis smoking.

Final Thoughts

Cannabis can be an extremely helpful treatment option or tool for recreational users to simply relax and enjoy life, but it comes at a cost. By using some of the tips and tricks outlined above, you can help to mitigate any extra expense and make your cannabis dollar work for you.

Why Cannabis Flower Still Reigns Supreme

While there are currently many ways to ingest cannabis, they are not all created equal. In fact, despite the progression into concentrates, oils and edibles, cannabis flower is still the best ways to consume cannabis for health benefits.

The reason that cannabis flower is losing popularity is simply because it is not as potent as other forms of cannabis. The THC levels of dried cannabis typically max out around 30%, with an average being around 18-22% THC. Concentrates on the other hand are easily hitting between 70% and 90% pure THC levels.

This may be great news for individuals just looking to get “high”, but if you are looking to reap all the benefits of cannabis, flower is still the best option. Let us explain.

Higher Potency Not Always Best

cannabis flower

Given the THC content reaching an upwards of 90% in concentrates, versus around 20% in cannabis flower, you would think concentrates would be better, right? Not necessarily. Compare it to alcohol – if you went into the liquor store looking for the highest alcohol content you would come out with several bottles of 190 proof, 95% alcohol. Sure, this is the highest potency but will surely destroy your liver and is definitely not as tasty as wine or beer.

The recent consumerism of cannabis has led individuals to believe that the higher the THC content, the better. However, this view completely negates multiple other factors. Since THC was first isolated back in 1964, science has found over 480 natural compounds present in the cannabis plant including a variety of cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBN, CBG, etc) and terpenes. To ignore these other compounds is a great failure to both individuals who consume recreationally and patients who are using cannabis as a form of treatment.

Additionally, many cannabis users have had experiences where a lower potency of flower (ie: 18%) can have more powerful effects than a higher potency flower (ie: 25%). It simply depends on the quality of the flower – as a whole – and not just the THC levels. Different levels of terpenes, flavonoids and mixture of cannabinoids will have an impact on the users experience, including the effects and benefits of that particular strain.

The Entourage Effect

cannabis flower

Factors such cannabinoid levels and the terpenes present in a cannabis plant all influence the effects of that particular strain – not just THC. This is known as the “Entourage Effect”, which is simply the realization that every compound within a cannabis plant or strain works synergistically together to produce those effects.

The idea of focusing solely on one factor (such as THC or even CBD), can severely limit a users experience and even result in failed therapy for patients as not all ailments can be solved by pure THC or pure CBD. In fact, THC and CBD work better when used in combination.

While CBD can somewhat limit the psychoactive effects of THC, this is great news for individuals who are prone to anxiety or paranoia when consuming THC in high doses. Beyond this, CBD actually inhibits the breakdown of THC thereby enabling longer-lasting effects. Research has also proven that the painkilling properties of THC and CBD are indeed more powerful when taken together.

The “Full-Spectrum” Difference

cannabis flower

According to Emma Chasen, a cannabis science educator with a plant medicine biology degree from Brown University, “cannabis flower is the most natural form of the full-spectrum, whole plant medicine you find in cannabis”. Meaning, that while oils and concentrates have their place in the cannabis industry, they often do not provide the same full-spectrum benefits as the flower itself.

Cannabis flower is still one of the only products that contains pure, full-spectrum cannabis. While some companies are getting into full-spectrum CBD options and 1:1 options featuring a balanced ratio of THC and CBD, many of these oils can still lack terpene or flavonoid profiles. In addition, during the processing of many concentrates, cannabis is filtered through compounds such as butane or alcohol and often the secondary compounds (terpenes, flavonoids) are not preserved, which diminishes the health benefits and potential for relief.

While production of concentrates is improving, processors are still not able to capture the full-spectrum of compounds available in the cannabis plant. Therefore, it is hard to find an intact full-spectrum product once you deviate from the flower itself.

Final Thoughts

For individuals who wish to get the most out of their cannabis, focusing on flower is a great option – but that doesn’t mean you have to ignore edibles and concentrates too. Vape pens, shatter and gummies all have their place in recreational and medical cannabis, but it is important to be aware of what has been removed from your concentrates and the benefits of smoking whole, untouched product.

7 Benefits of Toking Regularly

There is no denying that cannabis is a potent and powerful plant with many medical benefits. While most long-term cannabis users are already familiar with many of these benefits, here are a few of our favourite benefits of toking regularly:

Cannabis Makes You More Productive

Despite the previously popular stereotype that “stoners are lazy”, cannabis can actually help improve productivity! While this is not the case for heavy Indica strains, there are many Sativa options that not only provide a clear-headed cerebral boost but can also assist with focus, creativity and energy! This is further proved by a 2006 study that determined regular cannabis users remain highly motivated compared to non-users, if not more so.

[siteorigin_widget class=”WP_Widget_Media_Image”][/siteorigin_widget]

Cannabis Assists with Social Issues

One of the major reasons for cannabis use is anxiety and, more particularly, social anxiety. Individuals who find themselves stressed in social situations have grabbed onto cannabis as a new-age social lubricant because of its ability to help them to feel calm and relaxed. The benefit is that people who previously felt stressed or unsure in social gatherings may find themselves more extroverted, or at least more comfortable in social situations and around new people.

[siteorigin_widget class=”WP_Widget_Media_Image”][/siteorigin_widget]

Cannabis Can Improve Lung Function

Contrary to popular belief, smoking marijuana does not actually reduce lung function. In fact, according to a 2012 study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association, cannabis use can actually increase lung capacity. While tobacco smokers will lose function over time, it is found that cannabis users maintain or improve their lung function.

[siteorigin_widget class=”WP_Widget_Media_Image”][/siteorigin_widget]

Some speculation is that this is due to the deep inhale of cannabis compared to tobacco, however cannabis is considered a “bronchodilator”. This means it helps reduce resistance to increase airflow in the lungs, which is why cannabis is beneficial for asthma patients.

Cannabis Aids in Weight Loss

One of the more recent discoveries with cannabis is its ability to help regulate weight by managing metabolism and blood sugar (glucose) levels. In fact, individuals who consume cannabis have, on average, healthier Body Mass Index ratings than non-users. This seems counterintuitive given the “munchies” and other junk cravings experienced by cannabis users, however these cravings typically lessen as users become more experienced or regular tokers.

[siteorigin_widget class=”WP_Widget_Media_Image”][/siteorigin_widget]

Cannabis Combats PTSD

The anxiety reducing properties found in cannabis are powerful enough to help combat even PTSD. While this is not necessarily true for THC – too much of which can worsen symptoms – it is true for CBD. A non-psychoactive component, CBD is favoured for its ability to lessen excitement in the brain which can help to reduce symptoms experienced by seizure patients, as well as those battling PTSD. CBD can also help to regulate response to stress, fear and anxiety by influencing the endocannabinoid system.

[siteorigin_widget class=”WP_Widget_Media_Image”][/siteorigin_widget]

Cannabis Regulates Sleep Patterns

Both of the main components in cannabis (THC and CBD) are found to assist with insomnia and sleep-related symptoms or disorders due to its ability to correct imbalances that result in sleep issues. In fact, a University of Pennsylvania study determined that cannabis can improve breathing, calm various nerve system processes and relax muscles to ease all stages of sleep (including REM). Whether your insomnia stems from anxiety, a mood disorder or physical condition, cannabis is a great alternative.

[siteorigin_widget class=”WP_Widget_Media_Image”][/siteorigin_widget]

Cannabis is a Great Alternative to Alcohol

From a societal and health standpoint, perhaps one of the best benefits of cannabis is that it serves as a great alternative for alcohol. Alcohol happens to be the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States and it doesn’t end there. Alcohol is an addictive and damaging product and is the contributing factor for many workplace and domestic disputes. This varies greatly from cannabis, which has caused zero deaths to date and actually improves health and reduces anxiety and depression. In fact, cannabis is found to be 114 times safer than alcohol!

Bioavailability of Cannabis FlowerCategoriesBenefits of Cannabis

Bioavailability of Cannabis Flower

What is Bioavailability?

According to the The American Heritage Medical Dictionary, the definition of bioavailability is considered “the degree to which a drug or other substance becomes available to the target tissue after administration”. In layman’s terms, it refers to the percentage of a dose that is actually absorbed by the body. Intravenous dosages, for instance, are considered 100% bioavailable as they are administered directly to the bloodstream.

Depending on your choice of cannabis consumption method, the bioavailability can differ.

Why does Bioavailability Matter?

There are many important factors that influence cannabis consumption and its effects including the cannabinoid levels. Whether it is less than 1% THC and 25% CBD or a product that is less than 1% CBD and 25% THC, the level of cannabinoids plays an important role in the benefits of cannabis. In addition, there are terpene and flavonoid factors which also influence the strain qualities and effects. These components all work together in what is known as the “entourage effect”. While this all well and good, how much of these components you absorb comes down to bioavailability.

Bioavailability of Cannabis Flower

Traditionally, high quality products and flower will have a higher level of bioavailability than their lower end cousins. The benefit of better bioavailability also means that you require less product to experience the effects. Essentially, this is the biggest factor in cannabis potency. In fact, a strain with 25% THC can have less bioavailability than a better quality strain at 18% THC. So while you may have purchased a product with more THC, that doesn’t necessarily mean you will absorb more.

Bioavailability of Cannabis Flower (Joints)

Joints are still the preferred method for smoking cannabis and still one of the most effective and efficient methods – followed by vaping, dabbing and edibles. Typically the effects from a well rolled joint are shorter lasting (up to 2 hours) but are much quicker to onset than other consumption methods.

Bioavailability of Cannabis Flower

When it comes to the bioavailability of joints, factors such as the quantity and quality of the bud will play an important role. A 2005 study found that THC inhaled via smoking has an average bioavailability of 30% and effects typically occur within 10 minutes. Additional studies from 2007 and 2013 have found that bioavailability can actually range from 2% to 56% with most results on the higher end of the scale. This, of course, is dependant on the quality of the cannabis and smoking dynamics such as inhalation volume, duration and spacing of puffs. However, it was revealed that experienced users tend to have higher bioavailability than novices – good news for us regular tokers!

Interestingly enough, a 2003 study also determined that THC has a greater bioavailability than CBD making it more potent – especially when smoked.

How Cannabis Relieves Different Kinds of Pain

From chronic pain to arthritis to muscle spasms, medical marijuana can provide potent relief. While all pain is the result of coordinated activation of brain cells, it is important to know the cause of your pain in order to determine the best strain for fighting it. Pain can be classified in three categories: Nociceptive, Neuropathic and Central. Each category is unique and will therefore benefit from therapies unique to that particular type of pain.

Nociceptive Pain (Inflammation)

cannabis and pain

Nociceptive Pain is a fancy phrase for pain caused by inflammation and often relates to tissue damage. This type of pain can be described as sharp, aching or throbbing and typically follows physical damage such as an injury. Some other examples of nociceptive pain includes arthritis, sprains, burns and bruising. When injuries occur, the body sends inflammatory and immune cells to help repair the damage. During this process, proteins and chemicals are released for healing which are what activate the receptors and send pain signals to the brain.

The severity of this pain can be reduced in two ways: 1) Blocking the inflammatory process itself or the signals or 2) Dampening the signals before they reach the brain. This is where cannabis comes in.

Cannabis and Inflammation

The cannabinoids THC and CBD both have a unique ability to reduce pain at the site of an injury due to their potent anti-inflammatory effects. THC does this by activating CB2 receptors in immune cells to dampen the body’s response to pain. THC can also directly activate CB1 receptors in the brain to modulate pain. Similarly, CBD blocks inflammatory mediators to dampen pain signals but it is also able to shift cell repair from pro-inflammatory properties to anti-inflammatory properties, thus reducing pain.

Best Strains for Inflammation

The best cannabis strains to fight inflammation are Indica and Indica-dominant options as they tend to have greater physical effects and a higher potency of THC to reduce pain. CBD-only strains are also great for pain relief, as mentioned above!

Some great inflammation fighting strains include:

  • Girl Scout Cookies: This is a potent Indica-dominant strain that produces heavy body effects, ideal for individuals looking for relief from inflammation and pain. It is also great for insomnia and can help improve appetite as well.
  • Green Crack: While most Sativa-dominant strains produce strong, heady highs they also offer moderate pain relief. This is a great daytime strain for individuals looking for some morning relief and it is known to boost mood and energy levels.
  • Charlotte’s Web (CBD): This strain features regularly high levels of CBD, up to 20%, with little to no THC. Despite zero psychoactive effects, Charlotte’s Web is excellent for managing and reducing levels of inflammation – especially in the case of chronic issues.

Neuropathic Pain

cannabis and pain

Another major type of pain is neuropathic pain, which results from the central nervous system and effects 7-10% of the population. This type of pain is congruent with forceful injury, stabbing or pinching that can cause damage nerves. Neuropathic pain can also occur from underlying diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease or Multiple Sclerosis whereby the cells break down, resulting in neuropathic damage and subsequently – pain.

Cannabis and Neuropathic Pain

Unlike nociceptive pain, which is caused by inflammation and is easy to target with steroids and other medications, neuropathic pain is traditionally more difficult to treat and manage. Fortunately, cannabis has been proven to be effective at managing multiple sclerosis and battling Parkinson’s Disease, as well as other conditions that present with this type of pain including Sciatica.

Best Strains for Neuropathic Pain

  • Purple Kush: This is a potent Indica-dominant strain named one of the top 10 most powerful strains! It is not for beginners, but can provide amazing pain relief for more experienced users. This strain is ideal for neuropathic pain due to the full body effects and it can also help with improving mood and insomnia.
  • Sour Diesel: Sour Diesel is an almost-pure Sativa strain that is highly uplifting and invigorating! Due to the uplifting nature, this strain is well suited to relieving anxiety and depression but it can also help with mild to moderate pain.
  • Grand Daddy Purple: This Indica-dominant strain produces overwhelming physical relaxation and cerebral euphoria ideal for managing chronic pain, muscle spasms and insomnia.

Central Pain

cannabis and pain

In short, Central Pain refers to all pain that is the result of dysfunction to the nervous system. Conditions such as Fibromyalgia are strong examples of this type of pain and is caused by dysfunction in how pain signals are routed to the brain and get processed.

Cannabis and Central Pain

Due to the breadth of this type of pain, it is still largely being studied however there is mounting evidence for the benefits of medical marijuana and fibromyalgia. The results of this shows promise for other types of central nervous pain as well.

Best Strains for Central Pain

While not all central pain will have the same cause, there are many cannabis strains that can provide potent relief for these patients.

  • Blue Dream: This is a near-perfect Hybrid that exhibits both Sativa and Indica effects. This strain produces both an electrifying and energetic high ideal for boosting mood, as well as strong body relaxation to leave you pain free.
  • Blueberry: Blueberry is an Indica dominant hybrid that produces a strong sense of calm in its users. Typically 16-24% THC, this strain is moderately potent and can help relieve pain, migraines and lift mood.
  • ACDC (CBD): This is a high-CBD strain that contains little to no THC meaning it is non-psychoactive. Instead, ACDC is a potent pain reliever that can help to improve focus and mood as well.

Cannabis is also beneficial to individuals suffering with chronic pain from illness or injury due to its ability to lift the mood. Most chronic pain patients find that they become depressed and/or anxious due to their pain and discomfort, making cannabis greatly beneficial to balancing both the body and the mind.

Choosing Your Ideal Strain

With so many options available for medical marijuana, it can be hard to know where to start! Many factors such as on your symptoms, severity of symptoms, time of day and tolerance can help to influence your decision regarding which cannabis product is best for you.

Here at VanCity Rolls, we focus only on pure flower as we believe that quality flower rolled up into a joint is still the best way to enjoy the benefits of cannabis. However, with hundreds of strains available, it can be hard to know which one to choose. That is where we come in!

Choosing Your Strain

There are of course three different varieties of the cannabis flower: Indica, Sativa and Hybrid. Each of these variations has their own genetics, growth pattern and effects. By looking at your symptoms and expectations, you can help narrow down your choices!

Indica

Evening use; potent pain management, insomnia relief

Choosing your ideal strain

Indica strains are typically shorter, wider plants with a 45 to 60 day flowering cycle. These strains have more physical effects resulting in full-body relaxation, sedation, increased appetite and tend to be sleep inducing. It is these effects that have earned Indica the reputation of putting you “in-da-couch”.

These strains are excellent for a variety of ailments but particularly the physical. Indica’s are potent pain relievers and can also assist with battling insomnia, anxiety, muscle spasms and more.

Sativa

Daytime use; potent mood management and energy boost

Choosing your ideal strain

Sativa strains come from taller, more narrow plant with a longer flowering cycle of up to 90 days. These strains have more cerebral effects and tend to improve mood along with increasing energy and creativity. The effects range from euphoric, energetic, giggly and even psychedelic in nature and are ideal for daytime use.

Sativa’s are predominantly used for managing mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, Bipolar Disorder and ADHD/ADD, but can also help to fight fatigue and pain. The “high” from these strains is less intense than the Indica and tend to be relaxing without being sedating.

Pure Sativa’s are hard to come by, but there are many Sativa-dominant strains available to users looking for a cerebral boost:

Jack Herer: Jack Herer is named after a famous cannabis activist and medical marijuana user of the same name. This strain features a distinctive cerebral high that produces a euphoric and blissful experience that is both creative and clear-headed. The effects are ideal for patients suffering from bipolar disorder, PTSD, migraines, anxiety and ADHD.

Green Crack: This strain is a long-running Sativa favourite. This is a highly potent strain that can reach up to 24% THC. Green Crack has strong cerebral effects that result in a boost of energy and improved mood. This strain is effective at treating anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD and migraines.

Pineapple Express: This is a Sativa-dominant strain created after the movie of the same name. Pineapple Express is a solid hitting Sativa that provides the user with a lasting energetic buzz to get through the afternoon. The uplifting effects are both calming and stimulating and are great for managing anxiety and stress, as well as chronic depression and pain.

Strawberry Cough: Strawberry Cough is a 80% Sativa-dominant strain that provides an uplifted, yet relaxed cerebral high that is both energizing and euphoric. This is a great daytime strain to help manage anxiety, stress and chronic fatigue.

THC Vs. CBD

choosing your ideal strain

While most users prefer cannabis flower that has high levels of THC, which is the cannabinoid that causes the “high” many patients are looking for. However, some individuals prefer to reap the benefits of cannabis without the high. This is where CBD comes in.

CBD is another powerful cannabinoid found throughout the medical marijuana industry. It is favored for its ability to provide pain relief and boost in mood without the psychoactive effects. While previously hard to find in the recreational arena, CBD is becoming increasingly popular and is a great medical strain for many ailments.

Charlotte’s Web: Charlotte’s Web is a world-renowned CBD strain with up to 20% CBD and less than 1% THC, making it a great medical option with no psychoactive effects. Charlotte’s Web is a Sativa-dominant hybrid that is highly effective for seizure disorders, chronic pain, muscle spasms, arthritis and headaches.

ACDC: This is another a high-CBD strain with less than 1% THC. ACDC has a ratio of 70:30 Sativa/Indica genetics that helps the user focus and can also improve social anxiety. As a pure CBD strain, ACDC is excellent for managing chronic pain, anxiety, multiple sclerosis, seizures, nausea, tumours and tremors.

Benefits of Cannabis

Despite the lack of legalization for cannabis in Canada, there is no question that this is a miracle plant! The two main cannabinoid compounds found in cannabis are known as THC and CBD. Both separately and together, these cannabinoids have incredible benefits to the human body. But wait! What is a cannabinoid?

Every mammal on the planet has what are known as “cannabinoid” receptors in the body. It is these receptors that allow the cannabis plant to influence the human body upon consumption.

Benefits of THC

Tetrahydrocannabinol – aka THC – is the most sought-after cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. This is due to the fact that THC is the psychoactive component that produces the “high” that many cannabis users seek. Many growers and breeders are continually trying to produce strains with a higher percentage of THC. Moderate strains range from 14-18% while more potent strains can range up to 28% THC, which packs quite a punch!

  • Release neurotransmitters including dopamine and serotonin to balance mood and manage anxiety and stress.
  • Reduces pain and inflammation by managing the body’s inflammatory response.
  • Can reduce oxidative stress in the cells and improve cellular regeneration.
  • Stimulates release of the hunger hormone to promote appetite.
  • Protects the brain against Alzheimer’s by reducing negative proteins.

Benefits of CBD

Cannabidiol – aka CBD – is the second most commonly found cannabinoid after THC. This cannabinoid has a lot of similar abilities to THC, but is considered to be more medically relevant as it is a non-psychoactive component. While still not as popular as it’s cousin, it provides many of the same benefits as THC, it does so without producing a “high”. As it grows in popularity, there will be more high-CBD strains available but they can be a bit harder to find currently.

Some of the benefits of CBD include:

  • Regulate release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin by manipulating the naturally occuring cannabinoid, anandamide, found in the human body.
  • Reduces anxiety by lessening activity within the hypothalamus.
  • Combats schizophrenia by managing anandamide; higher amounts of which are linked to a decrease in psychosis-related symptoms.
  • Can counteract the effects of THC by preventing other compounds to bind to the cannabinoid receptors.
  • Combats seizures by reducing excitement of brain cells – this is one of the most common uses for CBD oil currently.
  • Reduces depression by managing the endocannabinoid system and the release of neurotransmitters.
  • Communicates with C2 receptors throughout the body to block pain signals and reduce inflammation in the cells.
  • Suppresses appetite for individuals battling overactive thyroid conditions or other weight-related diseases.
  • Can regulate fear and anxiety throughout the body and brain to help manage PTSD

Other Hidden Benefits of Cannabis

It is hard to imagine that this plant would be capable of even MORE benefits, but there are a few hidden benefits to cannabis that have been discovered over the years.

However, in addition to the more commonly known effects, cannabis can also:

  • Regulate metabolism, resulting in 16% lower fasting insulin.
  • Manage asthma by dilating the bronchioles within the lungs and also reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Regulate blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels and reducing inflammation, allowing blood to move more freely throughout the body.

History of Cannabis in Vancouver

The Vancouver area has long been associated with producing quality cannabis – or “BC Bud” as it is more commonly known. The cannabis grown in the Metro Vancouver area is easily some of the best in North America. The demand for this cannabis has been long standing, despite the currently illegal status of cannabis in Canada.

Cannabis was officially added to the Confidential Restricted List in Canada in 1923, but recreational use in Canada was entirely unheard of until the 1930s. It was around that time that cannabis cultivation was also banned, under the Opium and Narcotic Drug Act in 1938. Even then, popularity did not grow until the 1960s when cannabis gained ground amongst middle-class college students – later expanding to include a broader demographic ranging from young adults to seniors.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

It was around this time, in 1961, when the first licensed producers were given government permission by Health Canada. However, with the growth in usage, the Narcotics Control Act increased the penalty for marijuana possession to 14 years up to life in prison in 1961.

Many years later, a 1972 report recommended removing criminal penalties for cannabis possession – though the plant was still not legalized. Cannabis use in Canada then began to stabilize in the 1980s before seeing another large jump between 1996 and 2000. During these four years, Canada saw a 10% increase in use amongst 18-29 year olds. In addition, during this time, Canada legalized commercial cultivation and production of industrial hemp in 1998.

When it comes to medical marijuana, this was not established until 2001 when Health Canada determined there were two categories for medical patients:

  • Category 1: Covered any symptoms treated through cannabis use with the context of it being “compassionate end-of-life care”.
  • Category 2: For applicants suffering from debilitating symptoms, beyond what was covered in Category 1.

By 2004, the University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University did a study and found that 53% of BC residents had tried cannabis at least once.

Today, British Columbia has the largest support for legalized cannabis out of all the provinces in Canada. In addition, cannabis smoking is quite well tolerated through Vancouver and the Lower Mainland by both residents and the police force. In addition, there are currently 22 licensed producers of cannabis in British Columbia. While this is less than the 57 licensed producers in Ontario, there are still many individual and commercial growers that are operating outside of the Health Canada licensing, allowing BC to have a surplus of bud available for purchase across both local storefronts and online MOM (mail-order marijuana) operations.

Since 1997, public opinion polls have shown that most Canadians agree with the idea that smoking marijuana should not be a criminal offence. However, it is only 21 years later that we are finally seeing movement towards cannabis legalization with new laws to be implemented across Canada later this year.
